\u201cYeah,\u201d Paolini recently recalled. \u201cAnd 15-40, something like that? Almost lost the match. But, you know, it changed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And changed it did. What started as a near-loss turned into a career-defining moment. Paolini stormed back to win the last 10 games and flipped the script on her season. She didn\u2019t just escape that match\u2014she went on to claim her first WTA 1000 title at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before Dubai, Paolini\u2019s only tour-level title had been at a WTA 250 event in Slovenia. But in Dubai, she caught fire. One by one, she took down an elite field: Leylah Fernandez, Maria Sakkari, Elena Rybakina, Sorana Cirstea, and, in the final, Anna Kalinskaya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSometimes, it just happens like that,\u201d she said. \u201cThe best tournaments, you start struggling\u2014and then you find it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At 28 years old, Paolini truly found herself on the court. By the end of 2024, she had skyrocketed up the rankings, reaching No. 4 in the PIF WTA Rankings. Now, she returns to Dubai not just as a contender but as the defending champion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Paolini\u2019s run in Dubai was only the beginning. A month earlier, she had broken new ground by reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open. But no one could have predicted what would come next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She surged through the French Open, making it all the way to the final on the red clay of Roland Garros. Then, in a stunning back-to-back run, she reached another Grand Slam final at Wimbledon. Two major finals in just a few weeks\u2014a feat few saw coming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEvery step last year helped me,\u201d she said. \u201cHelped me to get to second week [of a Grand Slam] for first time, which helped me to play better the rest of the year. You improve and you feel you can play these matches. Give me so much confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Paolini\u2019s magic wasn\u2019t limited to singles. Alongside her doubles partner Sara Errani, she reached the final at Roland Garros and then went on to claim Olympic gold in Paris. Now, her focus is on defending her Dubai title, but she\u2019s approaching it with a fresh mindset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m trying to tell myself that this year it\u2019s a different story, completely different,\u201d she emphasized. \u201cWe have to write a new story, not think too much of the past.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That doesn\u2019t mean forgetting everything that happened. Paolini acknowledges that her 2024 success gave her belief, but she also understands the challenge ahead. Her main focus? Fine-tuning her serve and increasing precision, especially on the first ball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With success comes pressure, and Paolini admits she feels it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m trying to focus on the work, to tell myself that everything can happen in tennis,\u201d she said. \u201cYou have to keep going and going, try to do good things. Trying also to keep expectations low. But with expectations, of course, I think it\u2019s tougher for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her journey over the past year has been nothing short of remarkable.
