Guy Pearce is finally opening up about something that\u2019s clearly been weighing on him for a long time. In a new, deeply emotional interview on The Hollywood Reporter\u2019s Awards Chatter<\/em> podcast, Pearce got visibly choked up recalling his experiences working with Kevin Spacey on L.A. Confidential<\/em>\u2014a film that remains a classic in the neo-noir genre but now holds some complicated memories for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This isn\u2019t the first time Pearce has alluded to the discomfort he felt on set back in 1997. In a 2018 interview, he casually referred to Spacey as \u201ca handsy guy\u201d but later walked that comment back, realizing the gravity of the situation. Now, though, he\u2019s telling his story more fully, and it\u2019s clear that those experiences had a lasting impact on him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Long-Held Burden Resurfaces<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During the conversation with THR\u2019s Scott Feinberg, Pearce reflected on how he initially brushed off Spacey\u2019s behavior. \u201cAh, that\u2019s nothing,\u201d he would tell himself repeatedly over the five months of filming. But the reality was, he wasn\u2019t comfortable, and he was scared. \u201cI did that for five months, and really, I was sort of scared of Kevin because he\u2019s quite an aggressive man.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pearce described Spacey as \u201cextremely charming\u201d and \u201cbrilliant at what he does,\u201d but also someone who \u201cholds a room remarkably\u201d in a way that felt intimidating at times. And while he emphasizes that he was never sexually assaulted or molested, Spacey\u2019s advances and attention made him feel deeply uneasy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most striking details Pearce shared was how he felt a sense of relief on set only when fellow actor Simon Baker was around. \u201cThe only days I feel safe are the days when Simon is on set because I\u2019m dumped like a hot potato, and [Kevin] focuses on [Simon] because he was ten times prettier than I am.\u201d That line alone speaks volumes about what Pearce endured during filming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Wake-Up Call That Led to Tears<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For decades, Pearce pushed those memories aside, rationalizing that they weren\u2019t as bad as what others had suffered. But everything changed in 2017 when the #MeToo movement erupted, and actor Anthony Rapp publicly accused Spacey of making sexual advances toward him when he was just 14 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pearce was in London at the time when he read the headlines\u2014and suddenly, the floodgates opened. \u201cI heard [the reports] and I broke down and sobbed, and I couldn\u2019t stop,\u201d he admitted. \u201cI think it really dawned on me the impact that had occurred and how I had either shelved it or blocked it out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That moment became a profound wake-up call for him, forcing him to acknowledge just how much that experience had affected him. Even after all these years, the weight of what happened\u2014of brushing things aside and dismissing his own feelings\u2014still lingered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Facing Spacey Again<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pearce also revealed that he has had \u201ca couple of confrontations\u201d with Spacey over the years, and they didn\u2019t go well. \u201cThey got ugly,\u201d he said, without diving into specifics. The tension clearly still exists, and it\u2019s something Pearce has had to navigate in his own way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking back, he finds himself in a complicated position. On one hand, he doesn\u2019t necessarily want to focus on his personal experience with Spacey. But on the other, he doesn\u2019t want to let him get away with what he\u2019s done to people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI just try to be more honest about it now and call it for what it is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Timing Feels Ironic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps what makes this moment of reflection even more striking is the fact that Pearce\u2019s latest film, The Brutalist<\/em>, features him in a role that eerily echoes some of the very themes he\u2019s speaking out about. In the A24 film\u2014which has garnered ten Oscar nominations\u2014Pearce plays Harrison Lee Van Buren Sr., a wealthy industrialist who sexually assaults a central male character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a tough role, and one that Pearce has likely approached with layers of personal understanding, given everything he\u2019s now acknowledging about his past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
